about

In 1996, I moved to Austin and wound up in a little house off 38th ½ street. I wrote and recorded there for a while until I fell into disfavor with the landlord, but it was a blessing in disguise because I ended up renting a disused 73 acre farm with a rambling house on what was then the far outskirts of South Austin. The builder had been from Nebraska, so it had a built in concrete tornado shelter in the basement, which was a hoot to record in. Nina Singh and I were writing a bunch of material for our new project, Kitty Gordon, which she had started while I was in LA working with Maia Sharp, and we were also working on new Borrowers material. Joe and Josh would come to stay for extended stretches, and we would write and record. Some of those songs would end up on The Borrowers' self-released second album “Overcoming Gravity,” and some would eventually end up on a Kitty Gordon album “Weather.” These tracks come from those sessions: many of them are co-writes with some combination of Joe, Josh, Nina and other friends. To my ears, they seem to speak of disillusionment more than anything else. I'm not sure if it was our collective circumstances, the times, or what, but there it is.
