LINER NOTES: (subject to revision as my memory gets jogged)

The Borrowers started in LA in about 1992, and was intially comprised of myself, Cheryl Stryker and Shawn Lee. Few demos remain from that first period, but I may dig some up.

This album comprises demos from The Borrowers in our second lineup: Joshua Segal; violin and english horn, Josef Zimmerman; upright bass, Shawn Lee; drums, and myself.

These were recorded between 1993 and 1994 in various studios in LA. I don't remember the names of the studios, but I know we recorded a lot with Peggy McAffee (Routledge). She was extremely generous with her time. At least one song was recorded at Carole King's home studio with her wonderful co-producer, the late Rudy Guess.

“Let Go” and “Got a Thing” were recorded with the help of Randy Sharp at his great home studio in Van Nuys where I later produced a number of tracks for his uber-talented daughter Maia, now a successful artist in her own right. Maia sang the duo parts on both the demo and the released versions of “Mercy Bound.”

Which brings us to “Mercy Bound” which was recorded in the dining room of our second-floor apartment in Santa Monica using a CAD Equitech microphone into a mackie mixer feeding a Tascam 38 eight track reel-to-reel recorder. The only outboard gear was a pari of DBX 163x compressors which I still have.

I recorded numerous songs that way myself and for other artist friends I was working with at the time; “Street Parade” is one of them; others may appear on another collection.

Best,

Mark
